Are you Savage, or a Gentleman?

Memorial Day means a lot of things to a lot of people. The most important of which is remembering the lives of those given to ensure this weekend exists. Therefore, you better be damned sure any service member who attends your Barbecue Party is treated the way they’ve earned. You should already be thanking a soldier whenever you see one, but I digress.

Now that our choice of the grill you will use has been worked out in The Learning Man’s Chef: Memorial Day Barbecue Recipes, let’s get to the “meat” of the series.  Remember folks, the staple items are in that category for a reason.

Barbecue Beers & Brats Hot Tub

Bratwursts sitting in a hot tub of beer and onions on the barbecue grill
Beers plus Brats equals a tremendous hot tub of flavor.

Is there a better combination in the world than beers and bratwurst (or hot dogs)? I didn’t think so. This is the best Memorial Day meal with the least prep time possible.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons of butter

1 onion, sliced

2 to 3 bottles of your favorite beer

16 of your favorite brand of hot dogs or brats

Process

  • Preheat your grill to medium
  • Melt the butter in an 11×9-inch foil baking pan by putting directly on the grill. Stir in the onions and beer. Keep cooking and stir frequently.
  • Grill your brats or hot dogs as normal and place in the pan with beer and onions when they finish. You can keep the pan warm for about two hours on medium-low heat and enjoy!

A lager or a brown ale will provide the most complimentary flavor to go with those Brats

Red, White, & Blue Stuffed Burgers

Burgers being stuffed with blue cheese crumbles for the barbecue
Stuffed burgers create an exciting surprise for any tailgate

Stuffed burgers are a little tricky to do at first. Once you master them, the possibilities for these barbecue recipes are endless! Try this explosion of flavor that includes hot sauce, blue cheese, and (Mmmmm) bacon.

Ingredients

4 slices bacon

2 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese

1 tablespoon butter

2 tablespoons hot sauce

1 tablespoon breadcrumbs

1.5 pounds ground beef

Salt and black pepper to taste

Process

  • Cook bacon until almost crisp then finely chop and place in small bowl. Stir in blue cheese, hot sauce, and butter until well blended.
  • Divide ground beef into eight equal portions. Flatten into thin patties about 4 inches wide, mix in bread crumbs, salt, and pepper. Place 2 tablespoons of mixture into the center of each of four patties; cover with remaining patties and pinch edges together to seal.
  • Grill for 12-15 minutes, turning once. Let stand two minutes before serving.

breadcrumbs are the key to keeping those beautiful burgers together

Enjoy!

Now that you have these burgers and beer brats to enjoy, make sure to stay tuned for the next installment of this series where I will cover a complimentary dish and some sides.
